Chance,
There are some here on Doves, like myself, who believe that Jesus fulfilled exactly the first 3.5 years of Daniel's 70th week with His ministry. The last exact 3.5 years would have been fulfilled if He wasn't 'cut off'/crucified. He told the people because they didn't recognize their visitation from God, that everything changes now. Jesus wept over this. Resulting in a huge mid-week break in the Daniel's 70 Week timeline. Leaving 3.5 years left to be fulfilled sometime in the future - thus the 42 months of The Revelation. (This, of course, is not mainline eschatology.)I see this followed by the times of the Gentiles ..then at some point those last 3.5 years will be completed. Maybe this timeline will start where it ended...when Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem.....??
This topic was brought up at the latter part of discussions on a Prophecy Watchers discussion, but they were primarily talking about preterists & partial preterists. So, they didn't get into the discussion involving this from the futurist, dispensational view, similar to what you described.I agree with your assessment of the first half of Daniel's 70th week being fulfilled by Jesus' 3½ year ministry, where he confirmed the covenant.Leaving the last half for the 3½ years leading up to Jesus' second advent.
I have also wondered if the antichrist may know that since Israel still rejects Jesus, that they are therefore still awaiting a messianic confirmation of the covenant.Where he would then, as an anti-messiah, allow, or help bring about, the restarting of the animal sacrifices in a rebuilt temple, in a false 3½ year relationship with Israel? This would end when he goes into the temple, declaring himself as God, placing the abomination of desolation, and stopping the animal sacrifices that he helped restart?
However, the final 3½ years may have multiple purposes. For the antichrist, it is when he, as the beast, does all the horrible things written about him, including the horrible things against the Jews.Yet for Jesus, it will be the time that he completes what he began with Israel, 2500 years ago:
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
With possibly the time of Jacob's trouble, as part of the, "to finish the transgression", where the remnant will be prepared for Jesus' return. The world will go against Israel, 2 parts in the land will be cutoff, and Jerusalem will be assaulted.Yet at the darkest moment, Jesus returns to rescue his people, who will cry, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the LORD, and he will destroy the enemy armies.
I have also wondered if Israel's final sin will be when many go after the anti-messiah, restarting animal sacrifices, all while still rejecting Jesus and his sacrifice? That possibly the abomination of desolation, itself, may be a judgment upon this particular last sin?
