Christians, as they never had the oil of the Holy Spirit." 

Matthew 25:8 says, "And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out." Since their lamps had gone out, they must have had oil at one time in them.  At this point in time, they cannot see their sins that they haven't repented of as they are in spiritual darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says, "Quench not the Spirit." Ephesians 4:30 says, "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."  

 Matthew 25 Greek interlinear, parsed and per word translation, free online shows "they were quenched" rather than the words "gone out."

 Our sinful actions and refusing to repent can quench the Holy Spirit which is evidently what happened to the 5 Foolish Virgins left behind when the bridegroom, Jesus Christ came.
