"What did they think of when it was first said?"

It's one thing, looking back, after the crucifixion and resurrection, and the writing of the new testament.
But what did the people, during the time of Jesus' ministry, think of, when Jesus said:

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

What did people think Jesus meant by, "take up his cross daily", and "bear his cross"?
Did they think of the Roman cross for crucifixion?
If so, what did, "take up his cross daily", mean to them?

Today, many view it personally, about dying daily to ourselves and to the world.
But what did it mean to people, then, even before Jesus was crucified?
