BREAKING NEWS:
9:15 p.m.
A M6.5 quake was reported by the official European monitoring agency (EMSC) about four hours ago in western British Columbia about 100 miles southeast of Kitimat, Canada on the northernmost end of the Cascadia subduction zone, just inland of the Queen Charlotte Sound.
Some phone apps have reported it along with alert notices. Google Maps has reported it as a M6.5 "severe earthquake" and has the affected area shaded: Quake Map
Some news outlets including The Jerusalem Post reported this quake, citing USGS as their source. USGS reported it on their public feed, but then deleted it, after giving a specific location, magnitude, and depth. USGS rarely reports any quakes in Canada unless they are very large (this one certainly is).
The Canadian agency has not reported it, but it is often days late reporting anything after a weekend or a holiday. Some governmental agencies are denying that it happened at all.
Subscribers have e-mailed asking me to confirm these reports. What we need to someone to contact anyone they know in the region to see if it was felt, because a M6.5 quake is a big shaker on land.
If it did not happen, then we won't see increased seismic activity downstream, but if it did, then both the Pacific Northwest and California are in for major action over the next 7-10 days.
Watch and see!
