“If anyone comes to Me (Jesus) and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life also, he..... "cannot be"..... MY disciple” (Luke 14:26)
 
AND whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.(Luke 14:27).
 
AND he that does not take up his cross, and follow after Me, is not "worthy" of Me (being mine). (Matthew 10:38)

Jesus was not saying that this person cannot be good and upright, but that he cannot be someone over whom Jesus can write the word........... "Mine." (belonging to Him...as in Bride)
