(fivedoves.com)  In my opinion, the  time that the Gentiles tread the city of Jerusalem underfoot is during the 3 1/2 years or 42 months of the Great Tribulation period.  During the Great Tribulation period the image of the Beast is set up and worshipped, and those who do not worship the image of the Beast will be beheaded and not receive the mark of the Beast in the forehead nor in the right hand in order to buy or sell.  Those worshipping the image of the Beast after worshipping the image of theBeast will receive the mark of the Beast, his name or the number of his name in the forehead or in the right hand in order to buy or sell.

In my opinion, the world could have a cashless society first without the mark of the Beast since the Bible doesn't name who the Beast is, and people would just need to buy and sell using their smartphone, iphone, android phone or on their computer as cash purchases would be outlawed.  Without the Beast's name or knowing what his mark looks like, I don't see how the mark of the Beast would be implemented at the beginning of the 7 year tribulation period.  It's not like he's going to say I am the Antichrist or I am the Beast or I am the Little Horn.  However, when the Beasts sits in the temple of God in Jerusalem, we will know his name and the False Prophet will request that the people make an image of the Beast which will be worshipped.

Rev. 14:9 says, "And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, ...."  

In my opinion it sounds like worship of the beast's image comes before receiving his mark in the forehead or in the right hand in order to buy and sell.
