If you look at the direct translation of Revelation 13:5 from the Greek, you will note that the word "continue" is not there. It simply states that the beast will have authority to act for 42 months. There is nothing to indicate that the beast is given a FURTHER 42 months on top of a previous 42 months. 42 months is the length of time the beast is given authority. Please see the 1st link. This is directly from the Greek.

In Revelation 11, after the two witnesses are killed (lying in the street for 3.5 days before being called to "Come up here", Revelation 11:15 informs us that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our LORD and His Messiah and He will reign forever and ever. This indicates that LORD Jesus assumes His kingship and crown soon after the two witnesses are killed.

In Revelation 12:13 we are told that the dragon - realising that he has been hurled to earth - immediately starts pursuing the woman (Israel). Revelation 12:14 tells us that the woman (Israel) is immediately rescued and is flown to a place pre-prepared for her in the wilderness, where she is taken care of for a time, times and half a time. Which translates to 42 months or 3.5 years.

I have often pondered on the fact that LORD Jesus was cut off in the middle of 7. Our LORD walked the earth - as our Messiah - for approx. 3.5 years before being brutally cut off. It stands to reason that the devil only has the same amount of allotted time....to do his worst. 3.5 years or 42 months. Almighty God is consistent.
