I’ve always been taught
that Babylon is only a city, and cannot be a country.
However, when the Lord
spoke about old testament Babylon, he often spoke of it
as meaning an entire land, a nation:
Jeremiah 50:28 The voice of them that
flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare
in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance
of his temple.
Line 28 said the “land of”
Babylon.
Jeremiah 50:32 And the most proud shall
stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I
will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour
all round about him.
Line 32 said that Babylon
had cities (plural), which would make it a land or a
nation.
Jeremiah 50:38 A drought is upon
her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the
land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
In line 38, Babylon is
called the “land” of graven images, making it a land, a
nation.
Jeremiah 51:13 O thou that dwellest
upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is
come, and the
measure of thy covetousness.
In line 13, Babylon is
said to dwell upon many waters, not just the Euphrates,
it’s capital city, but upon many waters.
Jeremiah
51:42 The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered
with the multitude of the waves thereof.
43 Her cities are a desolation, a
dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man
dwelleth, neither doth any son
of man pass thereby.
Babylon is said to have
cities, and is a land; a land with cities, a nation.
Jeremiah 51:47 Therefore, behold, the
days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven
images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be
confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of
her.
Not only the capital city,
but the “whole land”.
