Breaking News Update - Moderation or Deception?Dear Mary,When Iranıs new president, Hassan Rouhani, came to the United States and addressed the world at the UN General Assembly recently, he projected an image of calm and moderation. His words offered peace and hope. In an interview with CNN he claimed that Iran had no interest in nuclear weapons. He vowed to seek a peaceful resolution to the nuclear crisis. And as the Jerusalem Post just reported, Iran has been selected to serve on the UN General Assemblyıs Committee for Disarmament and International Security.
Today Rouhaniıs words at the UN are being called into question by the release of an interview he did with Iranian television months ago during the election which he won. Appearing on Iranıs state-run television IRIB he was accused of making concessions to the West that hindered Iranıs nuclear work. (Rouhani was in charge of Iranıs nuclear program a decade ago.)

In response Rouhani declared that he was personally responsible for fooling the West and allowing the program to continue. ³We halted the nuclear program?² he asked, rhetorically. ³We were the ones to complete it! We completed the technology. Do you know when we developed yellowcake? Winter, 2004. Do you know when the number of centrifuges reached 3,000? Winter, 2004.²
The fact that this new and supposedly moderate leader made an election campaign boast of his success in deceiving the rest of the world so that Iranıs nuclear program could continue is hardly encouraging to the People of Israel who have been watching Iranıs rapid progress with deepening alarm. The words of Rouhani
on the world stage may sound comforting, but his previous words reveal them to be empty and meaningless.
