"CR Reply to David Blackman - Thundering Booms"
Hi John,
I don't have a profile at 5D but visit there and appreciate the work you do. I wanted to add to CR's observations:
CR Reply to David Blackman - Thundering Booms
Shortly before CR first posted on thundering booms, I heard a similar storm entry up north.
My first thought was hunting guns -- but it was the middle of the day, off season. As the storm rolled in, it was paced like firecrackers popping louder than the distant thunder, and these sounds stopped as the storm arrived.
I
don't think we were expecting a thunderstorm that day, because a family
member had driven an hour away to work outdoors on a project. They
remarked about the same popping noises 75 miles away -- which confirmed
it was not local fireworks or hunters.
The only concrete
explanation I've found is hail cannons owned by orchard growers, which
are activated on the fronts, when hail is a risk. These are fired at
regular intervals, which was not what we heard.

I am still curious, and will keep checking 5D for updates.
