Abomination of Desolation

While reading the Word today (July 27, 2012), I discovered something I never knew before about the abomination that causes desolation.  It will happen right after Jerusalem is surrounded by armies.  I know this because Jesus spoke about the abomination that causes desolation, as recorded in Mt 24:15; Mk 13:14; and Lk 21:20.  It is the same in Matthew and Mark, but Luke records Jesus saying it a little differently.

Matthew recorded Jesus saying: "Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. (Mat 24:15-16)

Mark recorded Jesus saying: "But when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. (Mar 13:14)

Luke recorded Jesus saying: "By your endurance you will gain your lives. "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. "Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city…Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” (Luk 21:19-21, 24)

Notice the phrase “Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains,” which is found in all three gospels.  In Matthew and Mark, it’s preceded by the phrase, “when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION.”  But in Luke it is preceded by the phrase, “when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies.”  This means that the time when the abomination of desolation is set up occurs when Jerusalem is surrounded by armies.

When a city is surrounded by enemy armies, it has been captured or is about to be captured.  I put all of this together with Oden Hetrick’s teaching that the capture of Jerusalem is the first of four major events to occur right before the rapture. It will be followed by worldwide darkness for several days, then the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the rapture of the elect.

As I was reading Daniel, I noticed that he referred to the abomination of desolation four times:

1.     It set itself up to be as great as the commander of the army of the Lord; it took away the daily sacrifice from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down. Because of rebellion, the Lord’s people and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground. Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled —the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot of the Lord’s people?” He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.” Daniel 8:11-14

2.     “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. Daniel 9:25-28

3.     "Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation. (Dan 11:31)

4.     "From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. (Dan 12:11)

I observed In Daniel 9 that the evil ruler will confirm a seven-year covenant, and at the 3.5-year point, he will put an end to sacrifice and offering, and set up an abomination that causes desolation at the temple.  It will be at this 3.5-yr point that he will destroy the city and the sanctuary.  This is confirmed by Luke’s record of Jesus saying that the abomination of desolation will occur in conjunction with the capture of Jerusalem.

I observed that Daniel repeated in 12:11 that there would be 3.5 yrs (1,290 days) from the time that the evil ruler abolishes the regular sacrifice and sets up the abomination of desolation until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.  This confirms that it will occur at the beginning of the 3.5-year Great Tribulation.

I observed that Israel was reestablished as a nation in 1967. By adding Daniel’s seven sevens to 1967, we arrive at the Hebrew year 5776, which is 2015 or 2016. I sensed that 2015 or 2016 would be a significant year.

If the evil ruler’s seven-year covenant (treaty or term of office) were to begin for example in January 2013, it would end in January 2020.  The middle point in that period would be sometime in 2016.  [Note on 10-9-12: Alternatively, if the evil ruler’s seven-year “covenant” or “term of office” were to begin on October 29, 2008, it would end in September 2015.]

The apostle Paul spoke of the evil ruler and his abomination of desolation when he wrote to the Thessalonians.  He said: “Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.” (2Th 2:1-10)

The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him will not come unless the man of lawlessness is first revealed.  And Paul explained what the abomination would be.  He said this son of destruction would take his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.

According to Lois Hetrick (author of loishetrick.com), “The Abomination of Desolation can be destruction of: the Temple, the army, the city or the people. The Abomination of Desolation happens at the very beginning of the 3 ½ years when the armies surround Jerusalem to destroy her.”  She believes that the Great Tribulation, lasting 3.5 years, begins when the armies surround Jerusalem to destroy it.  If that is so, then we may be right on the brink of seeing that occur.  But since there is currently no temple, the abomination of desolation may be the destruction of the Israeli Defense Forces or the city of Jerusalem, on account of the abominable ruler that deceives them into thinking he will come to their defense, who ultimately betrays them to their enemies – the Muslim nations.
