"MYSTERIOUS SHAMGAR"
I have written a lot about parallels in the Bible. Here is
another one I found. It starts with the story of Shamgar.
Judges 3:30-31
New King James Version (NKJV)
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And
the land had rest for eighty years.
31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six
hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also
delivered Israel.
Shamgar is an enigmatic character with only a brief mention in
the Bible. He is armed only with a sharp stick. Even his name
suggests a mystery. It means "stranger". Shamgar certainly is a
stranger. We hardly know anything about him at all. Yet the
Bible says he delivered Israel.
He was seemingly poorly armed. An ox goad was just a long sharp
stick for poking stubborn cattle. A farm implement. Not much of
a weapon against swords, shields and spears.
I think the Bible is kind of like a sharp stick. The Bible is
just a book. But it prods us to do mighty things. In the hands
of a man who is willing to be used by God it can move stubborn
people.
God used another man who carried a stick. His name was Moses. We
are much more familiar with this character. Using his stick, he
parted the Red Sea. He led the Israelites. He performed many
miracles. He delivered his people.
Two sticks. Two stories. Same results.
The Bible gives us a third story of about a person. He carried
two sticks to His death and was crucified on them. He too
delivered His people. Jesus.
