LONDON — Britain's royal family was shaken yesterday by revelations that five of Queen Elizabeth II's cousins were taken to a mental hospital on the same day 46 years ago.

A Sun headline read: "Queen's Cousin Locked in Madhouse." An accompanying photograph showed a wrinkled and bedraggled elderly woman staring out blankly.

Other newspapers were quick to follow up yesterday, revealing that two of the queen's first cousins and three second cousins all were brought to a Victorian-era mental hospital in the heart of the Surrey countryside south of London on the same day in 1941.

The five belonged to the Bowes-Lyon family of the late Queen Mother Elizabeth.

The first cousins were listed as dead in the 1963 edition of Burke's Peerage, a guide to the British aristocracy.

And now arises the speculation as to whether there is an inherited mental illness in the royal family. "If five female cousins all have the same mental problem, it's pretty obvious the cause is genetic," leading genealogist Hugh Peskett was quoted as saying.

LONDON - Two cousins of Queen Elizabeth II who were listed as dead in a social register actually spent more than 40 years in a mental hospital, but the family Monday denied any suggestion of a cover-up.

Hospital officials said that Katherine Bowes-Lyon and Nerissa Bowes-Lyon, nieces of Queen Mother Elizabeth, lived in the same ward at the Royal Earlswood Mental Hospital in Redhill, south of London, from 1941 until their deaths.

Queen Elizabeth II and her family are directly descended from George III, who suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness from middle age to the end of his life. Since part of the mad old king's genetic inheritance lives on in the Windsor blood today, some of his mental estrangement may certainly be in Prince Charles.

June 7, 2012 ROMANIA - Britain's Prince Charles is relaxing in one of his favorite places, Transylvania Romania.
