"tree of life and water of life"

I was always told that we will not drink of the water of life, nor eat of the tree of life, because we don't need to, because we have eternal life.
I also was always told that only saved, resurrected people, will be in the new Jerusalem.
If both things are correct, then no one in new Jerusalem will drink of the water of life, or eat of the tree of life?
Somehow, that doesn't sound right to me.
Perhaps the purpose of the tree of life, in the new Jerusalem:

Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Will be different than it was in the garden of Eden:

Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Especially considering that he said this to the church of Ephesus:

Revelation 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

However, the tree of life, is also mentioned in reference to those living outside the new Jerusalem:

Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Then there is the water of life:

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

To whom is the invitation to take of the water of life given?
To those who are not yet saved, during the church age?
To those not yet saved, during the tribulation?
To those born during the thousand year kingdom, who are not yet saved?
To those living outside the new Jerusalem?
To those inside the new Jerusalem?
Or all the above?

Is the water of life the same as the living water, if not, how is it different?

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
