"TO DOVES -- I DON'T HAVE CELIAC DISEASE, BUT I DO HAVE A GLUTEN SENSITIVITY"

Doves,

On Wed. afternoon, 4/30, I finally received a phone call from my gastrologist's (Dr. K) office telling me that the endoscopy biopsy test performed on 4/15 indicated that I don't have Celiac disease which is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. I was told by his office that Dr. K. thinks I may have some type of Colitis which is another autoimmune disease that damages the colon. I then told the office girl that I had removed all gluten from my diet on 4/19 and on the morning of 4/20 I know longer had diarrhea to which she told me I may have a sensitivity to gluten. Praise Jesus!  She wanted to schedule an appointment for Mon. 5/05 at 4:45 pm which is too late in the day for me so she gave me the next appointment available on Wed. 5/14 at 9:30 am at which time I will go over the test results with the doctor.  I don't believe I have Colitis because the blood test done by my primary care physician, Dr. G., who sent me to Dr. K, indicated that I had elevated gliadin antibodies which may indicate Celiac disease which is why the endoscopy of the small intestine was done to determine whether I had Celiac disease or not. However, elevated gliadin antibodies can also indicate non-Celiac gluten sensitivity which is what I am sure I have. And yes, Dr. K. knows about the elevated gliadin antibodies from my blood test done by Dr. G's office as he went over it with me before I even had the endoscopy done so I don't know why he is thinking that I have Colitis.

Then on Thursday, I made the mistake of eating 3 small potato chips that were labelled gluten free that a friend offered me, and 26 minutes later I was in my bathroom. Since it was a Hannaford store brand, I should have known better.  Actually there are the same ingredients in their regular chips as the ones labelled gluten free which I found out after the fact, and they are the only Hannaford product in the store that says Gluten Free that I know of.  It must have been a case of cross contamination with wheat flour which means they make their gluten free chips in a facility that also processes wheat products, and they don't have safeguards set up in that facility to eliminate cross contamination because after that one episode yesterday at lunch time, everything on Friday morning was back to normal.  Praise Jesus!  I am very glad that a Non-Celiac gluten sensitivity is not damaging to the small intestine like Celiac disease is.
