Here is a basic version I was shown; there are many versions, however, this version is most common.

It is called English Ordinal, and here is how it works:

Letters in the alphabet are substituted with their ordinal values.

The letter a has an ordinal value of 1, and the letter z, an ordinal value of 26.

So, ABC sums to 6 because a+b+c = 6.
