The Branch Matthew 2:23 (KJV) And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Matthew 2:23 says that the prophets said that the Messiah would come from Nazareth. Yes the prophets do but it’s a little cryptic. The root of the word “branch” is netzer which signifies either, a branch or the city of Nazareth. It can be applied that Jesus “the Branch” is a Nazarene. The Matthew Henry commentary speaks of this. Isaiah 11:1-2 (KJV) 1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; Isaiah 4:2 (KJV) In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth [shall be] excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. Zechariah 3:8 (KJV) Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they [are] men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
