Donna, For years before I was saved, I used to always pray to the goddess Queen of Heaven. It came natural, and I did it with great zeal. The moment of my salvation, I knew that I had to repent of the Queen of Heaven, and to believe on the Lord Jesus. For all the years since then, I haven't prayed to, worshipped, or really even considered the goddess. However, the other day, as I was drifting in and out of sleep, I felt like my flesh was rising to worship the goddess. I immediately was wide awake, and wondering what in the world was that all about? My guess is that Jesus allowed me to see that my old nature, my flesh, never got saved, and is still as wicked as ever. My flesh never repented, and would still naturally crave goddess worship that it used to do. So is it possible that a church, that has already struggled with apostasy, backsliding, and even lost members and lost preachers, could fall into the trap of the flesh, energized by evil spirits, to worship a goddess again? I think that it is even more than possible. We all have to be so very careful that our old nature isn't allowed to come out fully. Everyone of us would be shocked out of our minds at what we could be capable of while in apostasy or backsliding.
