"Going about in
"sheepskins" and "goatskins" to David H"
I read all of the passages from St. Clement which you presented,
David, and I one I zeroed in on is the advice to wear humble
clothing like
sheepskins and goatskins.
We have had the horrible pictures of factories collapsed or
burned in Bangladesh due to unsafe building conditions, which
were created by
garment factory owners who did this to squeeze a few more
pennies out of their workers.
I suggest Christians should give up wearing clothes made by
companies which send jobs overseas. It is very hard to
actually find out where
our inexpensive shirts and pants are made, but in some cases you
can read "Made in Bangladesh" or "Made in China" on the labels
within the
items of clothing. I know my clothes, which come mostly
from catalogs like Lands End, are made in such places, and I
feel trapped by this.
Try buying American. I offer one possible source that is
(far as I can discern) primarily manufactured in America.
This is the "Deva"
catalog, which is mostly pure cotton, made in America.
Their clothing lasts well and is fairly priced. There must
be other sources like this.
But I have not found many sources made in America. Some
catalogs advertise shoes that are made in Europe, like Wolky,
which presumably
are not made by slave labor, although I don't know for
sure. Wolky shoes are fairly expensive (over a hundred
dollars a pair) but they last a long
time and will make your feet last longer too.
We are trapped by circumstances into buying slave-made goods but
let's try to avoid it when we can. And maybe we won't need
a lot more clothes
before the Trumpet sounds, praise God.
