"Re: David Smith re
the Law and Grace"
Dear David,
Your questions for Paul N.F cannot be answered here because he
is no longer living. He passed away several years ago, but John
Tng very graciously posts one of his messages here each day.
Paul was a dear friend and we all enjoy being reminded of his
devotion each day.
------------
Regarding the Law, it is generally taught that the Law was given
as a sort of mirror to show man that he cannot fulfill the Law
in his sin-stained flesh. Truly, our spirit born from above does
war with the flesh while we live in this world.
However, though we cannot meet the demands of the Law, we must
strive to do so while we live here in the flesh. Our failures
need daily confession and forgiveness from the Father because of
what Jesus did on the cross (1 John 1:8-9, i.e., He fulfilled
the Law completely for the first and last time by a man).
Of course, Jesus was no ordinary man, since He lived without
committing any sins. It is only through the agency of His death
and resurrection that we can be accepted into the Kingdom of
God. Our own good works are not in any way necessary nor
sufficient to provide us with spiritual salvation. Only by
accepting Jesus as Lord and Savour can we enter that future
Kingdom.
------------
In your search for answers to your questions about the Law and
other such matters of doctrine, the best place to search and
meditate is of course the Word of God. In addition, if you need
help understanding the context and deeper levels of meaning of
God's Word, commentaries may be useful too.
An understanding of the book of Romans can answer all of your
questions regarding the Law vis-a-vis the born-again Christian
believer, especially Chapters 6,7, and 8. Chapter 8 has been
called by many theologians the clearest and most comprehensive
introduction to Christian beliefs that exists, and clearly shows
that Christians are no longer under the Law, but are required to
honor the teachings of the Law, since they are simply a further
expression of the commandments proclaimed by Christ, e.g.,to
love God first, then to love our neighbor as ourselves, which
Jesus said were the two greatest laws (Matt. 22:37-40).
------------
The book by Dr. Chuck Missler called Learn the Bible in 24 Hours
is a good place to start in my opinion, although there are
several other excellent texts on understanding the Bible. Since
I own Missler's book and like it, I will illustrate the sort of
teaching that is available in a commentary from statements that
are made in that book.
On page 209 of Missler's book, he says "The epistle to the
Romans is a cornerstone in the Scriptures. Sometimes called the
Gospel according to Paul, it is the most comprehensive book in
the New Testament. If you are going to study the New Testament,
you must diligently address this book."
On page 216, "Paul then explains why the Law was given. The Law
was given to expose our sin nature, to incite the sin nature to
sin no more, to drive us to despair of self-effort. You don't
have a chance if you think you can clean yourself up before you
come to the Lord. You come to the Lord first, then he will clean
up your life."
"But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein
we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not
in the oldness of the letter." (Romans 7:6)
"What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but
under grace? God forbid. Know ye not that to whom ye yield
yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye
obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto
righteousness?...Being then made free from sin, ye became the
servants of righteousness."(Romans 6:15-16, 18)
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in
Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath
made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law
could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending
his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but
after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1-4)
After copying out these wonderful words, I am reminded again
that we as Christians are unique and special beings --
being justified by God through His giving of His only begotten
Son that we as sinners might be saved from death, as required by
the disobedience of our first parents in Eden. We never could
have earned the respect that He paid us, both Jew and Gentile,
free and slave. To be acknowledged by the Creator of all that
is!
To our dear heavenly Father we should offer each and every day
all honor, glory and heart-felt thanksgiving for His love,
forgiveness and redemption! Tell Him today that you love Him!!
With love,
Robert
