France’s Turn for the Worse May 4, 2012   France elected a new president, but Europe’s far right has already won. In this election, France’s establishment has embraced Islamophobic ideas to an unprecedented degree.  Marine Le Pen and the core of her appeal remains unchanged: It consists of hatred of Muslim immigrants.   

The sad spectacle of the last several weeks is the culmination of a wider European trend of accommodating the far right and it’s about to get much worse. 

And when Greece defaults on it's bailout and exits the Euro, what happens?  The European Central Bank’s holdings of Greek sovereign debt would suffer losses, which would largely be transferred back to Germany.  Germany is the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth-largest by nominal GDP in the world.  It's the staple of the EU.  The Dominos are falling.

China's state-run Global Times newspaper said in an editorial Monday that the French Election was "not likely to kickstart public debt reform in France. The change has to come from reflection of a wider scope," it said.

"But protests against austerity measures from Greece to France have suggested that this much-needed reflection is far from coming. Heads of State are busy pleasing voters, not leading reflection."
