The ring on the hand, with the image of Peter, with the keys of the kingdom, signifies the power of binding and loosing, which many Catholic believe was the power given to Peter, and is now past down to the present Pope.
 
The verse in which the Lord spoke about the keys of the kingdom have been wrongly  interpreted by the Roman Catholic Church for hundreds of years!
