More on the “Perfect Timing”

of God’s Word

24     “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.

25     Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.

26    And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

27    And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shell be poured upon the desolate,” Daniel 9:24-27.

Introduction

I am neither “gullible” nor ”arrogant” even though some of my critics have accused me of being both.  Our text for this study is one of the most controversial texts, if not the most controversial text, in the entire  Bible.   It is certainly not a text which I would personally pick to expound upon if I was simply choosing a text.  But the Lord God knows the heart of every man and woman who “professes” to be one of His children.   I have been in the Lord’s ministry for 59 years, and I hope I have served my Savior well.   Therefore when some honest seeker of truth asks for help in understanding a passage of Scripture in God’s Word, then I feel that I have no choice but to answer the seeker’s question as honestly and openly and Scripturally as I know how, depending on the Holy Spirit of the Lord God of Heaven to “guide” me “into all truth,” John 16:12-15.

Having been asked directly by a brother in Christ to explain to him why the “seven weeks” in this prophecy is separated from the “sixty-two weeks” in the prophecy, I feel I am left with no choice but to attempt to answer the question for the benefit of my brother and for other seekers of truth who may read this study.  After praying about this matter and seeking the Lord’s will, I KNOW that the Lord God has laid on my heart to write out what He has shown me in His Word in order that others of His people might know the truth and be moved to marvel at the accuracy of the inspired Word of God and give praise to His Holy Name. This statement sets forth my reason for this study.   I know in advance that some readers will joyfully receive the truth that, by the grace of God, I will set before them in this study, while other readers will mock and scoff and ridicule “my interpretation” for no other reason than that my answer will not fit into the mold of what they have been “traditionally” taught or harmonize with their own opinion or theory.   So be it!   “…..yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightiest be justified in thy sayings, and mightiest overcome when thou art judged,” Romans 3:4.

I now invite all interested parties to join us for a fascinating and enlightening study, and hopefully a study that will be a blessing to every reader…….

The Question?

In Daniel 9:25 the Scripture reads, “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.”

Now the question asked of me is “Why is the seven weeks separated from the sixty-two weeks in this Scripture and the Scripture that immediately follows?”

1

The answer to the question could be …..

[1]    That this is simply the way the ancients wrote out 69 weeks.   This is the answer that some have given to this question, for I have read their pathetic explanations for myself.   But such an answer is neither grammatically nor Scripturally correct.  It ought to be obvious to any honest reader that the Scriptures and the context both make it very clear that the “seven weeks” is undeniably separated from the “three score and two weeks.”   So what is the real reason for the separation?   I’m so glad you asked…..

The Background for this Prophecy

If our readers want to truly understand this prophecy, then it is absolutely essential to carefully study the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Haggai, for the Lord God’s revelation to Daniel is set against this background.  It would also help to give some serious attention to the study of Bible Chronology.

When Daniel began to inquire of the Lord, it was only two years before the end of the 70 years of Babylonian Captivity for the Jewish people, Daniel 9:2.   Daniel loved his people and was very concerned about what was going to happen to them when their 70 years of captivity ended.   Therefore he set “his face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth, and ashes” to see if God would reveal to him what would become of His people, 9:3.   What a demonstration of true love for his people and his land.   Would to God believers today had such an intense burning love for our people and country.  If so, perhaps the future of this country and people would be different.  I am afraid the future of the United States of America could be summed up in one verse in this book.  Read 9:14.

While Daniel was earnestly praying for his people and his land, the angel Gabriel was sent to him by the Lord God to give him the revelation contained in 9:24-27.   In this revelation Gabriel specifically told Daniel…..

[1]   That a period of “Seventy weeks” was determined [appointed…Acts 17:26] “upon thy people and upon thy holy city,” 9:24.   This makes it obvious that this prophecy is primarily concerned with the Jewish people and the city of Jerusalem.   It doesn’t concern the Gentiles other than to whatever  extent they have dealings with the Jewish people and the city of Jerusalem.  Right here see Zechariah 12:1-3.

The length of time as literally stated in the Hebrew text is “seventy sevens.”  In other words 70 x 7 or 490 years.   These are “weeks” of years.   That Israel was given a week of years in their Law is undeniable and indisputable by anyone willing to deal honestly with God’s Word.   Read it for yourself in Leviticus 25:1-4 and 25:8.

[2]   During, or by the end, of this 490 year period all “transgression” of God’s righteous Laws will cease, there will be no more “sins,” “reconciliation” for iniquity will have been made, “everlasting righteousness” will be brought in, “vision and prophecy” will be “sealed up” [cease…there will no longer be any need for such when humanity is dwelling in the very presence of the Lord Himself and can simply ask Him their questions about the future], and “the most holy” will be “anointed.”   It should be obvious to any true believer that all of these things mentioned will have come to pass by the end of the seven year Tribulation and the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom of Christ.

[3]    That the exact beginning of this 490 year period would be “marked” by a “commandment” [decree; proclamation] being made by some powerful authority figure to “restore and to build Jerusalem,” 9:25.  This is where the “hangup” comes in for many people who read this prophecy.  There were four decrees issued by four different kings at four different times.   The Lord God obviously left it up to His people to STUDY this prophecy and “sort out” which one of these four decrees actually marked the beginning of the “Seventy weeks.”.

The four different decrees were issued by:

1.         King Cyrus the Mede in 536 B.C. issued the first decree allowing and even encouraging

the Jewish people to return to their homeland and rebuild their Temple, Ezra 1:1-4.

2.         King Darius Hystaspis issued a decree to complete the rebuilding of the Temple in 468 B.C.,

2

          Ezra 4:24; 6:1-12.

3.         King Artaxerxes issued a decree encouraging the Jewish people to return to their homeland

and clean up and beautify the Temple in the seventh year of his reign, Ezra 7:7-28.

4.         King Artaxerxes issued a decree in the 20th year of his reign for Nehemiah and those Jews

who would go with him to return to their homeland and rebuild their city and wall, Nehemiah

          2:1-8; 2:13; 2:17.

Now the question is, which of these four decrees is the decree that fulfills the prophecy of Daniel 9:25?   And this brings us to…..

The Controversy

The vast majority of “scholars,” commentators, prophecy preachers and teachers, in the ranks of Christianity today dogmatically insist that only the decree issued by Artaxerxes Longimanus in 458 B.C. can possibly be the right decree.   Their argument is based on the reasoning that it is the only decree that conforms to the statements set forth in Daniel 9:25 about rebuilding Jerusalem, the street, and the wall.   They then begin their count with this decree counting the 69 weeks straight through to the crucifixion of Christ mentioned in 9:26.   As far as they are concerned, the question is settled for time and eternity.  The decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus just has to be it!

The Sad Record

Oh is that so?   No, it isn’t so!    I have personally read the various arguments and reasoning for such a date throughout the 59 years I have been in the Lord’s ministry, and I have been appalled by some of the “shenanigans” that “Christian men” will pull in order to make their theory “fit.”  Established historical dates have been changed, in some cases time has been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d, years have even been added or deleted, or whatever it took to make the count come out exactly on the day that Christ rode the donkey into Jerusalem or when He was crucified four days later.   Yes, some do assign the end of the 69 weeks [483 years] to the Lord’s Triumphal entry, while others assign the end of the count to the Lord’s crucifixion.     Well, some may think me to be just plain contrary, but it ought to be   obvious to even a “dunce” that both “dates” cannot be correct.  It is one date or the other, or neither date is correct.  I would remind our readers that “God is not the author of confusion,” 1 Corinthians 14:33. Hello!

The Decree of King Cyrus

According to the so-called “law of first mention” in the Scriptures, it is obvious that the decree issued by King Cyrus was the first decree dealing with the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.   But some object to this by quoting word for word the prophecy in Daniel 9:25, emphasizing that the prophecy explicitly mentions “restoring and building Jerusalem, the street, and the wall,” and they claim that this was not the way the decree of Cyrus was worded; that Cyrus only mentioned rebuilding the Temple and not the city, the street, or the wall.   I am made to wonder if these people have ever read 1 Timothy 6:4?  It is glaringly obvious that they haven’t seriously studied the decree issued by King Cyrus.  The decree issued by Cyrus is mentioned eight times in the Scriptures.   Sadly, many of God’s people read the decree of Cyrus as stated in 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 and Ezra 1:1-4 and never research any further.  But in Isaiah 44:28 the inspired Word explicitly states, “That saith of Cyrus, He is My shepherd, and shall perform all My pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.”   Now does the Lord God Himself say that Cyrus would perform allof God’s pleasure, or just part of it?   Well…???

Impossibilities…..

Now just when did the 69 weeks begin?   Since the prophecy is an exact specified period of time, unless one knows the exact beginning, then it is impossible to know the exact ending.   Is this

3

statement too heavy for some readers?   Think about it!

It is also impossible to “rightly divide” this prophecy and come up with the right answer to the problem if one is going to ignore what the Scriptures actually and literally say.  And what do they say?   The Scripture is actually and literally worded in the Hebrew text, “Then know and understand from the issuing of the Word to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem, to Messiah the Prince shall be weeks seven and weeks sixty and two. Again it shall be built with plaza and ditch even in the times of affliction,” 9:25 [Hendrickson’s Hebrew Greek English Interlinear Bible].   The wording of this Scripture in the Hebrew text makes it implicitly clear that the “seven weeks” are divided from the “sixty two weeks.”   The two periods of time do not run consecutively. Therefore it is a mistake to count them consecutively.  They are separated in the inspired Word of God, and therefore they would have been separated in their fulfillment.   Now if this doesn’t fit the theory of some of our readers, that is just “too bad, so sad.”   I am going to stay with what the Word of God actually and literally says regardless of how many readers get “bent out of shape.”   From the day the Lord called me into His ministry, I have not been the least bit impressed with what “Dr. Multiple Degrees” and “Brother Big Shot” has to say about God’s Word any more than what any other man has to say about it.  I want to know what the Word itself has to say!  PERIOD!

That there is a division in the Hebrew text between the “seven weeks” and the “sixty two weeks” cannot be denied by anyone willing to deal honestly with God’s Word.   Now why is the division there and what does it tell us about the fulfillment of this prophecy?     I’m so glad you asked…..

The Return of the Remnant

The return of the first Jewish remnant from the 70 years Babylonian captivity is recorded in Ezra 1.  It is in this chapter that the decree of Cyrus was issued in his very first year as King of Persia.   According to the historians and Biblical Chronologists the first year of King Cyrus was 536 B.C.  The number of those Jews who responded to his decree encouraging them to return to their homeland is recorded in Ezra 2:64.   Study these chapters very carefully.  I am not going to take the time and space to fill in every little detail for our readers, but I will refer to those passages that I consider vital to this study.

The first year of their return was obviously consumed with getting “settled” back in the land and providing a home [shelter] and food for their families.  Their formal worship of the God of Israel was restored in “the seventh month” of that first year as recorded in Ezra 3:1-7.   Glory to God!

However, it was in “the second year.....in the second month” after their return that they turned their attention to rebuilding the Temple, 3:8.   Therefore the work on rebuilding the Temple would have actually began in 535 B.C.  Exactly how much time passed before they were able to complete the foundation of the Temple is left unstated, but when the foundation was laid out there was a great celebration by the people, 3:9-13.  In the big picture, rebuilding the Temple was exactly what God had brought them back to do.   More on this thought later.

Almost from the time the remnant returned, they were beset by their enemies who were already living in the land.   These enemies harassed and interfered with them in every way possible, for their enemies did not want the Temple rebuilt and the Jewish people re-established in the land again, Ezra 4:1-16.

Is there not a distinct similarity to what happened back then, and what is happening in modern Israel today?   The wicked Muslim Arabs were bitterly opposed to the re-establishment of Israel as a nation in 1948, and have been harassing the Jews ever since then, right up to this present minute.   Solomon well said that history would repeat itself.  Read Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 and 3:15.

Cyrus passed off the world scene in 530 B.C. and eventually Ahasuerus Artaxerxes came to the throne of the Persian kingdom, Ezra 4:6-16.  It was during his reign that the wicked enemies of the Jewish people wrote Ahasuerus a letter complaining about the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple, and accusing the Jews of plotting an uprising against the Persian king.  The king then issued a decree bringing the rebuilding of the Temple to a complete halt, Ezra 4:17-24.   The Scriptures explicitly state

4

that the work on the temple was not resumed until “the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia,” Ezra 4:24.   Now how much time had elapsed from the return of the Jewish remnant until all work on the Temple ceased?   Well isn’t this amazing?

The Jewish remnant had began their return in “the first year of Cyrus king of Persia” [Ezra 1:1] in 536 B.C. and had worked on restoring their homeland and the Jewish Temple until the reign of Ahasuerus Artaxerxes, when all work was stopped in 487 B.C..   How many years are involved in this period of time?   49 years or “seven weeks.”   Hello!   Awake to the truth!

The Interval

Then for the next 19 years there was no work done on the Temple.   This period of time extends from 487 B.C. to 468 B.C.  486 – 468 = 19 years.  Those readers who don’t want to accept this are free to study it out for themselves.   I have!

In fact, I have devoted many hundreds of hours to studying Bible Chronology.   I have numerous books on Biblical Chronology in my personal library.   Like most other books on the Bible almost all of them “break down” at some point by leaving the Scriptures and depending solely on the opinions or theories of men.   The one Biblical Chronology book that appears to stay with the Scriptures is Chronology of the Old Testament, written or prepared by Martin Anstey and published by Kregel Publications. This is the only Biblical Chronology book which I recommend for use by God’s people.  Even then, no book written by men is infallible.   Seriously study and depend on God’s Word for the final “say so” on any Biblical subject.

The fact that there is a nineteen year gap between the stopping of work on the Temple and the work being resumed perfectly harmonizes with Daniel 9:25.

This gap also proves that the Lord God does not count time against Israel when the Jewish people are out of His favor.   The Lord God sent that Jewish remnant back to the land from Babylon to rebuild His Temple and His city.   But they were frightened by their enemies and the King’s decree and left off rebuilding the Temple after 49 years of being back in the land.   Right at that point the Lord God quit counting time against them for the next 19 years.

The Work Resumed

It is at this point that the prophecies in the Book of Haggai come into the picture.  Notice that it was in “the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month,” that the Lord God raised up the prophet Haggai to minister the Word of the Lord to the Jewish remnant who had returned from Babylonian captivity.   This is the exact same time that Ezra 4:24 states that work on the Temple was resumed.   Coincidence?   No!   Just the “perfect timing” of the Word of the Lord.

The prophet Haggai was inspired of God to sternly rebuke the Jewish remnant for dwelling in their “ceiled houses” while allowing His Temple to continue to lay in ruins, Haggai 1:3-11.  Haggai’s message from the Lord was believed and received by the remnant of the Jews who had returned; “Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord,” Haggai 1:12.

The Scriptures then tell us that work on the Temple was resumed “In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king,” Haggai 1:13-15.   And how they did work!   Read the books of Ezra and Nehemiah for the details.   They refused to allow their enemies to stop them or even discourage them, and as a result the rebuilding of the Temple was completed on “the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king,” Ezra 6:15.

The Count was Resumed

The day the Jews resumed their work on the Temple at the end of the 19 year interval, was also the

5

first day of the “sixty two weeks” [434 years] of Daniel 9:26.   The remnant was obeying the Lord in rebuilding the Temple and the count had once more began. The major details of the rebuilding are recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah, with minor details also found in Haggai and Zechariah.  The day the Temple was finished [Ezra 6:15] was followed by a dedication service with great rejoicing and sacrifices being offered by the people, Ezra 6:16-18.

But an even greater observance and celebration appears to have taken place the following Passover season, Ezra 6:19-22.

Sadly, even while the Jewish people were rejoicing the Lord God informed His prophet Haggai what all their “religiousity” meant to Him, Haggai 2:10-14.   The Lord God KNOWS the hearts of people, and He knew that even though they were rejoicing in their accomplishment in rebuilding the Temple, their heart as a people was far from the Lord.   The Lord God labeled their work as “unclean” in His eyes, Haggai 2:14-17.  Their subsequent history as recorded in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the “Minor prophets” proved the words of the Lord to be absolute truth as the Jewish people went farther and farther into sin and away from God.  Their rebellion and wickedness finally reached a climax on the day they rejected Christ as their own Messiah and King as He rode the donkey into Jerusalem and was proclaimed the “King” of Israel by His disciples in what is now called “The Triumphal Entry.”  Carefully study Luke 19:28-44. See also Zechariah 9:9.  That day was the 10th day of Abib [Nisan] on the Jewish calendar.  During the next three days Christ was examined by the Jews, the Herodians, and the Priests, in exact fulfillment of the requirements for the Passover Lamb set forth in Exodus 12:5-6.  Then on Passover, four days after the end of the “sixty two weeks” the Jews crucified the Lord Jesus, their Messiah and King, in exact fulfillment of Daniel 9:26.

The Count was Stopped Again

While true believers KNOW that the rejection and crucifixion of Christ was ordained in the foreknowledge and planning of Almighty God, that doesn’t lessen the wickedness of the choices made by the Jewish people and their wicked leaders to crucify the Son of God.   As they rejected Him as their King at the end of the “sixty two weeks,” the Lord God took it as the crowning insult to Himself and stopped His count on the Jewish people again.   See Hosea 5:15.  Notice in this prophecy that the Lord God specifically states that He will not return to the Jewish people “till they acknowledge their offense, and seek My face…”  Compare a similar statement made by the Lord God in Matthew 23:38-39.  The count was stopped which began…..

The Last and final Interval

The wonderful 2,000 year “dispensation of grace” upon the Gentiles then intervened.

It should be obvious to every serious reader that this still leaves the 70th Week of the prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 yet to be fulfilled.  The “seven weeks” [49 years] were fulfilled from the return of the Jews from captivity in Babylon until they were forced to stop work on the rebuilding of the Temple.   A 19 year interval then occurred before they were permitted to resume work on the Temple.  Then the “sixty two weeks” were fulfilled from the time their work on the Temple was resumed until the exact day Christ rode the donkey into Jerusalem and was rejected as their King.   7 + 62 = 69.  So 69 of the “seventy weeks” have been fulfilled. That there is yet one more week to be fulfilled is then glaringly obvious.   It also ought to be glaringly obvious that this final week is seven years in length.   It is not the 3 ½ years which some “false teachers” are attempting to “palm off” on the people today.   Read 2 Peter 2:1-2, take heed, and beware!

Have our readers got room for one more “glaringly obvious?”   Hope so!   It is also glaringly obvious that it has been approximately 2,000 years since the first coming of Christ, so the last and final interval in the prophecy is about over!   The final 70th Week of Daniel’s prophecy is staring humanity in the face, ready to begin at any minute now.

6

The final count Awaits

It should be obvious to every reader that the count for the final 70th week of Daniel’s prophecy is scheduled to begin at the end of this present “dispensation of grace,” and the end of this present dispensation is staring humanity in the face RIGHT NOW!   In essence, the final 70th week of Daniel’s prophecy could begin at any minute now.   So what is holding it up?

Whether some readers like it or not, there is another prophetic event scheduled by the Lord God which will bring this present dispensation to an end and begin the seven year Tribulation.   Those believers who know how to “rightly divide the Word of truth” refer to this transitional event as “the blessed hope” of the believer presently living under the New Covenant of GRACE.   Read about this event for yourself in John 14:1-3, 1 Corinthians 15:50-52, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Titus 2:11-15, and Revelation 3:10.   In this last passage the Lord Jesus Christ Himself explicitly promised His church that He would keep her “from the hour of temptation [peirasmos….tribulation], which shall come upon all the world, to try [test; judge] them that dwell upon the earth,” Revelation 3:10.   This is the promise of a Pre-tribulation Rapture for true New Covenant believers whether some today like it or not.   The resurrection and rapture of true New Covenant believers will then be the transitional event which ends the 2,000 year interval and begins the count for the final 70th week of the 490 year prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27.

Those “professing Christians” who choose to deny this truth are denying the explicit promise of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself and thereby making Christ out to be A LIAR!   No, this is not simply “my interpretation.”  Revelation 3:10 is a direct and precise statement which even a “dunce” should be able to understand.   It does not need to be “interpreted.”   It needs to be BELIEVED!  Hello!   If the “Jesus” you are serving is A LIAR, then I suggest that you dump him and seek the real Lord Jesus as your Savior and Lord, 2 Corinthians 11:3-4.

Immediately following the resurrection and rapture of New Covenant believers, or possibly on the very same day, the final 70th week of Daniel will begin and the count of the final week will begin.

The final 70th week will fulfill numerous prophecies given in God’s Word in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.  It is not my intention to discuss those prophecies in detail in this study.   I already have a study in print on The Seven Year Tribulation, and numerous related studies, which I will gladly send to any reader upon request.   My intention in writing this study was to demonstrate from God’s Word that there is an interval of time between the “seven weeks,” the “sixty two weeks,” and the final “seventieth week,” and to emphasize to every reader the “Perfect Timing” always set forth in the Word of God.  I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do.   What my readers now do with this information is between them and the Lord.   I would just like to see all who “profess” to be the Lord God’s people “rightly dividing the Word of truth” instead of bickering and arguing over it all the time.   Hello!

Conclusion

But whatever any reader plans to do with the information set forth in this study, it had best be done quickly.   We believers today are living right at the end of this present dispensation, and the whole prophetic picture could change at any minute or overnight.   Read again the words of the Lord in Luke 21:36 and make your “calling and election sure,” 2 Corinthians 13:5; 2 Peter 1:10.   I am not writing to entertain people, but rather I have a deep burden to minister the truth of the Word to encourage true believers in the faith, and to point lost seeking souls to Christ as the ONLY way of salvation, John 3:16; 3:36; 5:24; 14:6; Acts 4:12; 16:30-31; 20:21; Romans 10:8-13; Ephesians 2:8-10.  My readers will have to judge for themselves whether I accomplish that in my studies.  My precious Lord knows whether it comes from my heart, when I close my studies by saying that I would like to meet every reader in glory when our Lord comes to resurrect and rapture His New Covenant believers to glory.   Please don’t disappoint me!   .
