Saint Francis of Assisi, Italian San Francesco d’Assisi, baptized Giovanni, renamed Francesco, original name Francesco di Pietro (Peter) di Bernardone. Francis was the son of Pietro (Peter) di Bernardone, a cloth merchant, and the lady Pica, who may have come from France.(It's interesting that Pope Francis I took the name Francis from St. Francis of Assisi whose middle name was Peter, and whose father's first name was Peter also.)
