"to
Patrick re:Paul's thorn"
Patrick, In reading your letter to 5 doves
concerning Paul's thorn in the flesh I was compeled to write in
response to what I read as I was deeply concerned that you may
lead some who do not actually KNOW Jesus astray. I don't
think that whether we think pre-trib or post is going to impact
a person's salvation, but your letter could do that, as you may
give some a false sense of salvation when they are not actually
saved.
I do not agree that Paul's "thorn" was SIN. To even think
that the Lord would SEND a besetting sin someone's way to keep
them humble is pathetic. An affliction via our enemy,
yes. Job would be an example of that affliction (although
it wasn't to keep Job humble). But, again, to say that our
holy God actually afflicts us with a besetting sin is in my
opinion blasphemous. (But perhaps I don't know the true
definition of that word.)
Now, I am not saying that the born-again Christian becomes a
sin-free person who never STRUGGLES with sin, but God's word is
clear that we are "no longer slaves to our sinful nature", and
are now "slaves to righteousness". The longer we are IN
Christ Jesus the more like Him we should be becoming. And
if we are GROWING in our relationship with Him that will be
happening. I say that because those Christians that I know
that are not growing are oftentimes not much different than what
they were when they gave their lives to Christ. That's on
us, as it is also VERY clear throughout God's word that it is
God's desire for us to live lives that glorify Him, and He has
given us "through our knowledge of Him", (notice the knowledge
of- knowing Him) EVERYTHING we need for life and
godliness. And to teach that he would actually SEND a sin
in to our lives....well, I'm sorry but that is the craziest
thing I've ever read on the 5 doves website.
AND...to assure people that they are SAVED? That is the
job of the Holy Spirit. It is HE that "assures us that we
are sons of the Living God". If someone doubts their
salvation they are (1) not saved in the first place and
therefore the Holy Spirit is NOT going to give them an assurance
of something that does not exist, or (2) they have not grown in
their relationship with the Lord enough to yet recognize the
voice of the Holy Spirit who will give them that assurance
because that is what He does! It is a risky business to
assure people of something that could lead them to a false sense
of security that they ought not to have! If they don't
have that assurance then they need to ask themselves, "Why?"
So....please be aware that you are walking in dangerous
territory. The territory of false teaching. I do not
know you, and pray that you are doing it unaware, not
intentionally. Because if you are doing it intentionally
then I pity you when you stand before the Living God.
