These fish are very rarely seen but sightings have always heralded a massive earthquake.  There were Oarfish sightings just prior to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The same sightings occurred prior to the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake in February 2011.  A very short video clip in the link. 2 minutes.
