For years, when reading Hebrews chapter 12, I only thought of myself:Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Somehow I narcissistically thought this was talking about the great cloud of witnesses watching me run, cheering me on.I recently wondered if the great cloud of witnesses are all my brothers and sisters in Christ, fellow witnesses of Jesus. That we are all running, witnessing the gospel to the lost as we go.That this is all about Jesus, rather than all about me.The very next line convinced me:
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We are all to be looking unto Jesus, rather than all of them to be looking at me running.
