Hi Gino. First of all, the article I submitted was written by John Piper, well-respected senior pastor for 33 years at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mpls, MN. Granted the pastor is a Calvinist and I'm not. But I do appreciate and have been much blessed by his sermons. He says that at the age of 22, the following Bible verse "hit him" and shaped his theology every since: "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to do His good pleasure." (Philipians 2:12f)
I've posted about this before on the differences between Calvinism (God chose you) vs Arminiamism (you chose God). My understanding is that Calvinism emphasizes the sovereignty of God, while Arminianism emphasizes the responsibility of man. I don't consider myself a Calvinist as I'd like to believe God draws all people to Him (2nd Peter 3:9), but He also fully knows who will respond to His call and who are His sheep. Nor am I an Arminian as I believe in the simplicity of the gospel and that we are all sinners saved by His grace through our faith (His gift btw) and not by works lest any of us boast. But who's right? The Bible (which I'll stick with) says that "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (lst Corinthians 13:22)
The phrase that Pastor Piper used, "If You Do the Will of the Father, You Will Live Forever" was taken directly from the Bible: 1st John 2:17b: "But he who does the will of God abides for ever."
- Second, in verse 17b John says, "But he who does the will of God abides for ever." The opposite of loving the world is not only loving the Father (verse 15), but also doing the will of the Father (verse 17). And that connection is not hard to understand. Jesus said, "If you love me you will keep my commandments" (John 14:15). John said in 1 John 5:3, "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments." So loving the Father in verse 15 and doing the will of God in verse 17 are not really separate things. If you love God, you will love what he wills. It is empty talk to say I love God but I don't love what God loves. So John is saying in verse 17, "If you love the world, you will perish with the world, but if you don't love the world but love God, you will do his will and live with him for ever."
He does have some really good sermons which can be found here: http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/sermons/by-topic
