No one's taking Christmas out of schools on Texas
governor's watch
Throw out your "holiday tree" and dust off your Nativity set:
Christmas is coming to Texas schools. Gov. Rick Perry signed a
"Merry Christmas" bill protecting the celebration of religious
holidays in public schools Thursday, saying, "Religious freedom
does not mean freedom from religion." The signing ceremony was
jolly, attended by bell-ringing, bearded Santas in bright summer
clothes and a cluster of high school cheerleaders wearing red "I
cheer for Jesus" T-shirts. Flanking Perry: a man calling himself
"Santa G" (who griped he'd been "persona non grata in Texas
schools for too long") and an either amused or confused rabbi,
who quipped, "I thought this was the 'Happy Hanukkah' law."
