"Kick @## and chew
bubblegum and I'm all out of bubblegum"
I was talking with my wife about the possibility that some of us
might stick around after we have been changed to immortal beings
to help others and maybe even at some point to meet out judgment
on the Lord's enemies in some capacity before it's all over. I
borrowed a line from an old movie called John Carpenter's "They
Live" starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, a movie about "One
man's battle against aliens who are systematically gaining
control of the earth" (off the back cover). In the movie Piper's
character quips "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and
I'm all out of bubblegum..." I borrowed that line in
light-heartedly musing with my wife as to what I would feel like
if I ever did find myself in a position of having to fight for
Jesus in His army against His enemies. (Remember that boy Colton
Burpo who went to heaven, as told by Todd Burpo his dad, who
wrote a book, "Heaven is for Real" about the boy's experience?
In it little Colton says his dad is one day going to have a
sword (or bow and arrow, he can't remember which) and fight in
God's army with Jesus and the angels and the good people against
Satan and the monsters and the bad people.
So, anyway I was just talking about this possibility coming to
pass soon but then forgot all about it and went on to the days
events. Later we rented movies and finally got around to
watching the one I chose last night and guess what it says in
this movie? There are two main characters played by Al Pacino
and Christopher Walken the movie is called "Stand Up Guys" and
in it they decide to stand up to some mob guys and fight back
against bad guys. I had never heard of this movie and don't know
why I picked it and was even surprised when my wife wanted to
watch it with me because it's not the sort of movie we usually
watch together we both felt that if we didn't like it we'd take
it off and put in Disney's original "Jungle Book" which I had
also chosen (had never seen it as a kid and always wanted to see
what I missed...) Anyway there is a scene where the two guys
come nonchalantly into a bad guy's headquarters and get the drop
on them because they never thought anyone would be bold enough
to do this and they say to these guys "Don't you know that your
deeds have consequences? You reap what you sow..." Then later
when they get ready to go against other bad guys they say that
line a few times: I'm ready to chew gum and kick ass, and I'm
all out of gum." My wife and I were stunned. First we were both
amazed that we watched the whole movie because it turned out to
be better than we thought it was going to be and we both got the
significance of that line and how rare that line is yet I just
said it and in the very context of meeting out judgment on bad
guys as these were doing.
Anyway, having seen the comments about how soon our departure
might be these kinds of things seem more than mere coincidences.
Just wanted to share it with you all.
