Dear John and Doves,When the 4th of July quake (6.4) hit around 10:30 am that Thursday morning, it didn't feel scary to me.It was a rolling quake and didn't last very long at all. It felt like I was on a boat on a lake with rolling waves beneath me.
Having lived in Southern California for the past 50 years, it was basically something you get used to. And if there were to be any aftershocks, they usually always diminish in energy.So I just went on with my day.
But on the next day--the 5th of July--at about 8:20 pm that Friday evening, a much stronger quake (7.1) occurred and the rolling was more intense and lasted for what seemed like a full minute or more. In earthquake time that is long.
Each time a quake hits with a higher number, that means that each increment on the scale rises exponentially in power. This is not addition, but multiplication.
And according to "normal", this did not follow the usual pattern of being a weaker aftershock, but rather a much more stronger one.
And then an hour later, at about 9:18 pm that same evening, a sharp quick jolt hit, that lasted about a second.I mentally noted that it was a different type of strike---not rolling--but a sharp jolt instead, and I continued on with my conversation with my visiting nephew.
Now during the days of the 2 quakes, and even now, there has never been any identification of any fault lines whatsoever.Highly unusual.
The day after--Saturday July 6th--I was researching the net and came across an invaluable website:
A young man by the name ofBen Ferraiuolowho is studying to graduate in seismology and volcanology, and is remarkably proficient in interpreting seismographs etc.and explains things in common layman's language (I need that) was showing all the 1,000s of aftershocks that had been occurring since the 2 quakes.
And then he showed us how there was an empty space within the line of quakes shown, and that empty space was called"COSO Volcanic Field", an ancient volcanic field that was overlooked in modern years since having never been active.
He then examined other charts that suggested a mantle crust near the surface, with a possiblemagma plume down below.
Well he may as well have said that a Martian landed there because Californians are not known for looking out for volcanoes.
I had always believed that volcanoes only happened in Asia, and that Mt SaintHelens (Washington State 1980) was a fluke
Ben was so on target that the USGS (Geological Survey) had NO info on it at all.Actually, they had listed that the closest volcanic ground to the Los Angeles area was way up North near Mammoth Lake.
But by noon that day the USGS listed COSO as having its first volcanic tremor ever, at around 8:18 pm the night before.
So here we all are with a potentially active volcano in our "backyard" and never knew it.
Ben keeps watch on the Cascadian Subduction Zone which begins at Vancouver Canada and goes all the way to Northern California (Eureka). The name of that Tectonic Plate is the Juan de Fuca plate. It is reported to be far more powerful than the San Andreas Fault down here in California.
I'm glad I found his website and to be able to know this information.

Yesterday, Thursday the 18th, COSO had a 4.6Quake that crept closer to the GARLOCK Fault linewhich, if strong enough,would impact Bakersfield,Ventura County and all the Los Angeles Basin.
Our last quakes were "strike-slip", rolling faults.Gentle, somewhat.
But a"blind thrust fault"is more fatal and destructive (Northridge Quake) at an even lower magnitude.
I'm praying that we in Southern California are spared a major "Big One".Who knows?I may get raptured or I may get ruptured.Either way, I'm in Heaven with the Lord.
