"Olympic ArcelorMittal Orbit: Tower
of Babel"
Dear John and Doves,
Sorry if this has already been discussed.
The Olympic ArcelorMittal Orbit: When I first saw this it reminded me of artists impressions I've seen of the Tower of Babel. Then I find these comments from the architect Anish Kapoor, the Tower of Babel was apparently a reference, according to Kapoor; "There is a kind of medieval sense to it of reaching up to the sky, building the impossible. A procession, if you like. It's a long winding spiral: a folly that aspires to go even above the clouds and has something mythic about it."
Along with the European Parliament built on the same inspiration of the Tower of Babel, this has to be another defiant statement toward God, the architect and builders sound as if they would be totally aware of the rebellious intentions of the builders of the Tower of Babel.
At 114.5m -337ft, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK’s tallest sculpture and stands 22 metres taller than New York City’s Statue of Liberty.
