"Lewis: Is there a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 ?"

Lewis,  I could see why you were questioning the idea of a gap in Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.  I would ask you to consider the following however.  A premise for the gap theory is that there were beings on earth. Something happens and is contained in the words  of Gen. 1:2, Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Since we know that God is the only means of creation, we have a dilemma.  How can there be be a planet that has been created and yet there is no light?  We know God as a being of light and all He does is contained in His glory- light.  It appears that the Spirit is hovering over the waters which is making earth formless and void.  I know this might be a stretch for you and that is okay but let me get to the point.  There is a creative act in Gen 1:1, and yet we find a lack of the presence of God in the space of the planet earth in Gen 1:2.  There is water that the spirit is hovering over, there is presence here and then God brings (back) his light as the next stage in General 3.  During the 6 days of what we know as “creation”, the water is separated and earth appears.  Is that from ice that has melted under the presence of God’s reestablishment of light? In those 6 days, you see what could be a reestablishment of that which was previously here.  It would be God not willing for anything in His creation to stay in a useless state (void state) and bringing it back into the state it was originally designed to be.  Then we have Adam being perfect, then finding himself in a ruined state, asking and planning on God to bring about a way for humankind to be restored to their original state.  We have 6 days of restoration for a planet that found itself in a state of ruin and now another of God’s creation, man, finding himself in a ruined state waiting for a restoration act by God.  Because God showed us in Genesis that it takes 6 days to restore a ruined creation, is it not wonder that God’s plan for mans restoration was to take 6 days (6000 years) with God resting the last day (last 1000 years) while His Son takes over His rule? Just more to think about in a day and age where so much of what we thought was true is showing up to be a lie…..  Makes me question everything and hold onto ideas loosely.  My plan is to ask God, the author of truth, to show himself to me.  So please don’t take this article as criticism, just another believer sharing what they have “learned” along the way.
