I've heard recent renditions of the following:
Isaiah 29:11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
Line 11, when they have said, "I can't understand all them thee's and thou's".And line 12, when they said, "I don't know Greek " and "I don't know Hebrew".
Both of these claims are really copout excuses.Even lost people use phrases like, "Thou shalt not …", and they know what that means.I don't remember any writing of Paul where he tells Gentiles that they need to know Hebrew in order to understand the Bible.
When I neglect to read or study the scriptures, it is because of sin and my giving in to my flesh. Then that leads to more sin, in a spiral. It is too easy for me to make excuses for my not reading and studying the scriptures.
