“Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and the chairman of HKND Group, Wang Jing, signed the concession agreement giving HKND Group the rights to construct and manage the canal and associated projects for 50 years.

The Moscow Times has reported that Russia will take part in the building of the Nicaragua Canal, viewing the project in part as an opportunity to pursue strategic interests in the region. Construction will begin on December 29, 2014.

[While I lived in Honduras, China was actively seeking strategic advantages in Central America: it gained control of the Panama Canal, encouraged the locals to dismantle the US Southern Command, and began pursuing the creation of a second canal elsewhere in the isthmus. Russia, of course, was the major sponsor of Daniel Ortega during the Sandinista years, and during the past year has been renewing its projection of influence in the Caribbean basin region, especially in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and probably in Cuba as well.
