"to Karen
regarding flu prevention - this is the most important
mechanism of prevention"
Karen,
I appreciate your research on prevention of flu, but you forgot
the biggest prevention that there is - handwashing. It is
so important that you wash your hands and keep your hands away
from your face. In order to get a germ into the body,
there has to be a portal of entry. Our portals of entry
consist of our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, vagina and rectum.
I would venture to guess that most people who are getting the
flu touched something that harbored the bacteria for flu and
then either touched food that they injested, put their fingers
in the mouth or put their fingers in their nose. I am
always trying to keep my grandbabies hands clean. The
other day while we were waiting to be seated at Steak and Shake,
they were touching the bar stools, touching the table tops
around the bar, touching the machine that grabs stuffed animals
and touching a gum machine. Then we sat down to eat.
It is so important that you wash your hands and your children's
hands before eating every meal and every snack. Try to
encourage them not to pick their nose by telling them that it
introduces germs into their bodies that can make them
sick. It is more important that the hands are washed
BEFORE the meal than after the meal. How many times do you
see people sit down to eat without washing their hands, but then
they get up from a meal and wash their hands to remove the messy
food from their fingers/hands? Also when in a public
restroom, you should wash your hands before leaving and then use
either a paper towel or some toilet paper to open the door of
the restroom upon exiting. Many people never wash their
hands upon exiting a restroom and they open the doors with their
dirty hands. If you wash your hands, but then use those
clean hands to open a door, it is as though you never washed
your hands. More and more businesses are locating trash
cans next to the exit door so that people can dispose of the
paper towel that they open the door with.
If you keep dirty hands away from your face, fingers out of your
nose, and hands clean before eating anything at all (even think
about snacks) you have a good chance of not contracting the flu
or many other infections. The only other way that you
could contract the flu would be through eating contaminated food
at a restaurant. It might be a good idea to cook at home
until this flu outbreak is over.
God bless and stay healthy,
Kim D.
