A potential supply chain disruption on the Mississippi River could affect 7.2 million tons of commodities valued at $2.8 billion in the month of January alone, according to updated economic figures.
The river level near Thebes Ill., is projected to fall to 8 feet between Jan. 5th and 15th, effectively shutting down river traffic because most tug boats need at least 9 feet of water to operate.
On Nov. 30th, it was estimated that a river closure would displace $7 billion dollars worth of commodities including grains, coal, petroleum and chemicals.
And the Lower Mississippi sits right on top of the New Madrid Fault.

IAF, Navy rescue people stranded by floods

The heavy rains and subsequent floods in many parts of Israel have left plenty of people stranded. Unusually heavy winter rains forced the closure of main access routes to Tel Aviv on Tuesday (January 8), causing gridlock in and around Israel's commercial capital. The region is experiencing record-breaking rainfall.
Israel’s heaviest rainstorms in more than two decades have caused flooding that closed roads and damaged property throughout the country. Jerusalem residents now brace for as much as 30 centimeters (1 foot) of snow to the region.
