"RE: Craig O: 01.28.24: angels"

Craig,
Yes, it is a frightening thing which happened to those angels.
Additionally, the scriptures mention that man was specifically created in the image and likeness of God:

Genesis 1:26a And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

But, man sinned, and death resulted:

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

And it is man that Jesus redeems:

Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Galatians 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

To do so, Jesus took on the nature of man, not angels:

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

Therefore, Jesus was then able to die as a man, in our place:

Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb have the privilege and duty to pass on the gospel.
Apparently, this is one of the things that the angels desire to look into:

I Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

There is no indication of repentance, redemption, and forgiveness of angels, so, apparently they cannot understand those things, like a redeemed person can.
Those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb are given eternal life, by grace through faith, and pass from death unto life.
The angels do not have the same thing.
Jesus took on flesh, to die in our place, but he didn't do the same for the angels.
Early on, some angels sinned, and also man sinned.
However, Jesus is the redeemer of the descendants of Adam, for whosoever believes on him at this time.
There is no record of a Calvary type redemption of angels, though.

So, I do not really think the angels, like you mentioned, "⅓ of the angels gave up their eternal security by their choice and sin of rebellion".
They didn't have their eternity secured in a Savior who had died in their place and saved them.
Yet, they did give up their position and fellowship with the LORD, when they sinned.
But, there is no record that they gave up a free gift of eternal life which had been given to them by grace through faith.
They didn't come into their celestial state by way of the blood of Jesus, nor were they sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise.
Their sin was in a completely different context than when a believer sins.
Yes, sin is sin, and the wages of sin is death.
The main difference is that for the believer, those wages were paid by Jesus on the cross.
