There were Pharisees who believed, and not only said that the Gentiles needed to be circumcised, but also that the Gentiles had to keep the law of Moses:
Acts 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
Then James wrote to the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia, about their being told that they must be circumcised, but that they had to keep the law:
Acts 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
And perhaps the Gentile believers in Galatia had been also misdirected about their need to keep the law, in order to be saved or stay saved. So, when James had written to the Gentiles in Antioch, he said that there were four things that were necessary for the Gentile believers:
Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
James didn't tell those Gentiles that they needed to go to a synagogue on the sabbath. Some have argued that of course they needed the law, in particular the ten commandments, so that they would know not to murder or steal. However, Gentile nations already didn't tolerate murder or theft, and had been that way since Noah got off the ark.
Romans 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
The sabbath was a special sign given by the LORD to Israel, not to the whole world:
Exodus 31:13a Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
Ezekiel 20:12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.
Israel was to keep holy the sabbath - six days were profane, or common, for them to work and make money, but the seventh day they were to keep holy for the LORD.For believers, now, in the church age, every day should be equally holy to the LORD, whether we work, eat, recreate, or go to church. It would not be good for us to be "less holy" while we are at work, or worse yet, not even be holy. However, the law is a perfect picture of the pure righteousness of the LORD.So, when a believer is walking in the Spirit, the Spirit can only do what is pure and righteous. Therefore, it is certainly not someone trying to keep the law, in order to be saved or stay saved, but the Spirit leading a believer in righteousness. And, Paul wrote to those Galatians believers, who had come to believe that they now had to keep the law, what the law really fulfilled, anyway:
Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
The law is all about love, which is far more than simply what day someone goes to church.
Matthew 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
And no wonder, considering:
I John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
