Pope Francis is
schedules for an "Apostolic Visit" to Iraq, March 5 - 8,
2021. He will be the first pope to visit Iraq.
The pope will meet with
Muslim clerics, the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa
Al-Kadhimi, President Barham Salih, bishops, priests,
Iraqi Catholics. He will also meet with an
'influential leader of Shiite Muslims in Iraq' Ali
al-Sistani in Najaf - "one of the most sacred pilgrimage
sites in Shiite Islam, after only Mecca and
Medina. It is the burial place of Imam Ali ibn Abi
Talib, the son-in-law of Muhammad and the first Shiite
imam. Not far from Najaf is the tomb of the
prophet Ezekiel in Al Kifl, where the historic Jewish
synagogue at the site is now contained within a newly

He will be at
the plain of Ur, Iraq, the birthplace of Abraham,
where he will be holding an inter-religious prayer
service.
"The pope plans to
give a speech at an interreligious gathering at Ur
because of the importance of Abraham for all three major
monotheistic religions."

Ur is located about 200 miles south
of Baghdad, the site is made up of a pyramid style
ziggurat and a residential. complex. It was
excavated about 100 years ago by Leonard Worli who
found treasures "rivaling those found in Tutankhamen's
tomb in Egypt". One
of the world's oldest cities "a place where urban
dwelling, writing, and central state power
began. The father of Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam, Abraham is described in the biblical book of

Iraq is hoping that the pope's visit
will draw tourists and international attention to
bring funding for restoration work on its palaces and
temples.
