Purim Katan translates as "minor Purim" and is only observed on a Jewish leap year. 2019 / 5779 is a Jewish leap year. Quoting from the article in the link below, the Talmud says that there is essentially no difference between actual Purim and Purim Katan. Many understand this to mean that on Purim Katan, one is meant to focus on the emotional and internal aspects of Purim instead of focusing on the obvious external aspects of the holiday. Purim Katan falls on our calendar date of February 18th / 19th, 2019. Which....(drum roll, please) is THE date for the 2nd super moon of 2019. Wowzers! This year seems to really be focused on Purim with essentially 2 Purims to dwell on. The first to dwell on the emotional and internal aspects of the story of Purim. It is not to be celebrated in the same way - as in feasting and giving gifts. Purim "proper" of 2019 falls 30 days later on March 21st. Purim is actually meant to be a time of great celebration for the Jewish people. Marking their victory over Haman and his evil plot to murder all their people. Purim is a JOYOUS celebration. Purim Katan is a solemn marking of the events of Purim.

This is all so thought provoking because of the time we live in. Israel is over 70 years old now and she is in mortal danger as we speak. Let's not kid ourselves on that one. As an interesting aside - the 1st President of Iran took office in 1980 - a year after the success of the Iran revolution. Which makes it 39 years since the 1st of the 7 presidents of Iran. 39 is the number of chastisement.
