A Possible Scenario:

I am beginning to think the abomination that causes desolation will be an announcement to the world that the Temple Mount and the Western Wall will now be open to ALL faiths and everyone should come and worship the "false messiah" right here at this place. 

The Muslim's and Catholics will be so overjoyed [for they both want to get rid of the Jews, and what a quick way to do it]...they will flock like birds to the most holy place of the Jews [the Western Wall and Temple mount] and the government will willingly remove the restraint of protection for Jewish worshipers, as part of the deal.  The flood of Catholics, Muslims and every other religion will come and show no respect or regard for the traditions of the Jewish people.  Especially now that Israel has given the Vatican rule over the room of the Last Supper, King David's and King Solomon's tomb.  The Pope will probably want to come now, after he has been elected or clone/resurrected and have the "unholy mass", to consecrate their new foothold, in the city of Jerusalem. 

The Jews will be so crushed and enraged, and will know that the place of the "presence of G-d" has been desecrated, they will look upon this act as an "ABOMINATION"! Surely, they cannot worship Yahweh along with the unholy masses, who do not know their G-d.  So, to them, this place is no longer useful as a place to worship... it is now considered a desolate place.  I believe, this is the act that will cause them to flee to the mountains as spoken of in Matthew 24, now that the world has turned against them and they realize at this moment, they only have each other and the great HaShem.
