I think that is where the Holy Spirit comes into play, to have discernment about the nature of a manifestation. I would not automatically dismiss a manifestation though. Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon, who although of possessed great wisdom for a time, was no prophet. He was not the most spiritual of men. It appears that he didn't believe in an afterlife from Eccl. 9:5.
