"A SONG OF THE RAPTURE: 'SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT' is a Negro spititual written by Wallis Willis before 1862"
Dear Doves,
Here are some things 'to note' before you read the 'great lyrics' to this song:
The
'Sweet Chariot' referred to in the title is the 'Chariot of fire' that
'swung low down to earth' and carried Elijah to Heaven.
2 Kings 2:11
"Then
it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot
of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them;
and Elijah went up (was raptured) in a whirlwind into Heaven."
The
Jordan River is the EASTERN border of the land of Israel. when you look
over the Jordan River from Israel you are looking to the East. Jesus
and His angels will come from the East to West. Jesus was baptised in
the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
Matthew 24:31
"And He
will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will
gather together (rapture) His Elect from the four winds, from one end
of heaven to the other."
SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT
I looked over Jordan, and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home?
A band of angels coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.
Sometimes I'm up, and sometimes I'm down,
Coming for to carry me home
But still my soul feels heavenly bound,
Coming for to carry me home.
The brightest day that I can say,
Coming for to carry me home
When Jesus washed my sins away,
Coming for to carry me home.
If I get there before you do,
Coming for to carry me home
I'll cut a hole and pull you through,
Coming for to carry me home.
If you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I'm coming too,
Coming for to carry me home.
Swing low sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
Come Lord Jesus, and send Your 'band of angels' to gather us together and carry us Home.
Merry Christmas to everyone on Five Doves!
