"RE: Jovial - "Was the 7/27 Lunar
Eclipse Red Moon a sign of anything?""
I read your post of 5 AUG 2018 (http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/aug2018/jovial85.htm), "Was the 7/27 Lunar Eclipse Red Moon a sign of anything?" I concluded reading the first paragraph with some concern. By the time I finished reading the entire post, I was alarmed.
First, you make the case that "modern science" based on "PHYSICS" predicted the blood red moon. I ask you, Who created science and physics? And where does man's ability to know and understand science come from? Have we not been fashioned in the image of the Almighty?
Second, you say that there is no scientific explanation "how the moon would be red if the sun were dark." Perhaps that is because we don't know as much as we think we do. There are things we know today, and can model on computers today, that was not possible one hundred, five hundred, a thousand or even more years ago. Man's knowledge is always increasing so it is quite conceivable that such an event could in the future be predicted even though it is beyond our current ability to fathom.
What can be predicted today was not possible in the not so distant past. So, by your own definition, such an "unpredictable" event would qualify as a sign to that generation. But by your own definition it would not be a sign today. What changed? Why could it be a sign to a past generation but not to our current world? Because it can be predicted?
Third, you boldly assert that a blood red moon ". . . is no sign that G-d is interfering with the natural chain of events . . . ." May I remind you that Scripture declares, "For in him we live, and move, and have our being;" Acts 17:28 (KJV) God is far from not interfering with the natural chain of events. Indeed, nothing happens without his notice and approval. If you doubt this, read from the account of Job - chapters 1, 38 and 39.
Fourth, I'm sure you are aware that celestial bodies and formations have historically been associated with human events worldwide. For example, sightings of Mars have been considered to be a harbinger of war. This has resulted in Mars being known as the war god or god of war.
Fifth, your reasoning is built on a faulty premise: man's current level of understanding is complete and all-encompassing. This not only is a humanistic and secular approach, but it elevates the collective knowledge of mankind to the level of God. This is a clear echo of another passage of Scripture: "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:5 (KJV) This is a very dangerous position to espouse.
Additionally, you focus solely on the physics of the event and conveniently omit any consideration of the timing of the event. Taken together, as they should be, the blood moon clearly seems to qualify as a sign.
Sixth, your repeated use of "modern science" or "science" suggests adherence to the belief that science and Scripture do not completely align with each other. This is a tragic mistake that opens the door for one to question the authenticity of Scripture rather than the reverse. To keep a proper perspective on this one must unreservedly accept that God Almighty is the original Scientist. Secular science often pursues data and conclusions in a bid to reinforce God-less ideas that are intended to reduce God to a mythical existence that only the uninformed and uneducated embrace.
Seventh, your conclusion is quite revealing of the defect in your reasoning: "If science can explain it, it is not a supernatural sign of anything." There it is, quite bold and clear: you used four paragraphs to construct a conclusion audaciously devoid of God. I am reminded of the Scripture: "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;" 1 Corinthians 1:27 (KJV)
Lastly, your final statement is a direct contradiction of the plain text understanding of Genesis 1:14: "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:" (KJV)If the blood moon does not, in your mind, qualify as a sign of anything, then be honest and clearly state your belief. Do not attempt to bolster your belief by concocting a humanist argument that denies the involvement of God and is contrary to Scripture.
I do not, and will not, judge you over this. Every man must give an account of himself to God. However, remember the charge given to those who consider themselves strong: "11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ." 1 Corinthians 8:11 - 12 (KJV)
