"The Leftovers:  Episode 7"

Dear Doves,

This episode has Kevin’s son, Tommy, doing something very non-cultish: thinking for himself.

Tommy is protecting Holy Wayne’s pregnant American-Asian girlfriend, Christine. She is just about to give birth, when Tommy gets a call from Wayne. He is told to take $3,000, put it in a sealed envelope, and tape it under a specified mailbox. Tommy does that…but sticks around to see just who picks it up. He is in his car for quite awhile, then sees a guy get the envelope from under the mailbox. Tommy follows the guy back to some motel. He knocks on the door…and when the guy opens it, Tommy bursts in and yells for Wayne…who is not there. Tommy does see another underage American-Asian girl…who also is close to giving birth. Uh-oh…Wayne has impregnated yet another of these girls. Wayne told Tommy, originally, that Christine needed to be protected at all costs, that she was special, she is “the one”. Um…looks like that is no longer true. Tommy has been playing Joseph to Christine’s “Mary”…now Tommy sees there is another couple doing the exact same thing. He now recognizes Wayne for the liar that he is.

This guy that Tommy followed said he let Wayne hug him, to take away his pain. ‘Holy’ Wayne does seem to possess supernatural powers of healing. Tommy never took him up on the healing, never wanted the special hug from Wayne….and is somehow still able to think for himself.

The girl that this other guy is protecting is enraged that there is another young girl that is pregnant by Wayne. She takes a gun, screams that Wayne said the baby she is carrying will be “the bridge”…and tries to kill Tommy, but ends up shooting him in his hand.

Tommy runs out and makes his way back to Christine, but before he goes into their motel room to see her, he gets a phone call from Wayne. He takes the phone and throws it against a brick wall, destroying it. He goes into the room and sees that Christine has given birth….to a baby girl. We have to guess that’s not the AC…perhaps the other girl will have a baby boy.

In another scene, police chief Kevin has started a relationship with Nora Durst. This woman seems to be the one with the most guts in this whole show. She has lost everything, except her own fighting spirit. Anyway, to complicate matters, Kevin’s dad has escaped from the mental institution.

At the same time, Kevin’s daughter Jill…is with her stupid peers again in the woods. There is an old refrigerator, and the dumb teens see who can last the longest in it with the door shut. The one that previously lasted longest seems to have disappeared in the rapture. Jill is trying to outdo that kid, and breaks his record, although she is losing her breath due to lack of oxygen. She wins, a teen grabs the door to open it, only to have the handle come off. They yell they can’t get her out, she panics, and starts to lose consciousness. At that very moment, her grandfather, Kevin Sr., arrives to the rescue. It appears his “imaginary friends”, the voices in his head, told him to go and get her, that’s why he broke out of the institution. He pries open the door, lifts her out and tells her not to tell her dad she saw him. He runs out of the woods, and the other kids ask Jill who was that. She replies: “that’s my Grandpa”.

When he was the police chief, Kevin Sr. apparently set fire to the local library. He is beset by these voices in his head, telling him to do certain things. Of course, everyone thinks he’s crazy…but he maintains that he is completely sane and that the voices are real. He tells Kevin Jr. that something big is coming, and that these entities plan to use his son. They told him to give Kevin Jr. a certain copy of National Geographic from the 1970’s, and he gives it to him. Kevin wants no part of his dad’s craziness. His dad calls him a coward and hits him. He tears apart the magazine and says that his son is asleep and won’t wake up. Only special people get to be awake, others don’t. He gets his dad back to the institution, but his dad hugs him and kisses him before going back in.

When Kevin gets back to his house, he sees that Jill has bought the exact same copy of the magazine. He gets angry and is about to throw it out, but stops to look at it. Perhaps there is come clue in there.

Prior to this, Kevin brought home a dog, that bit him. He has way too many prescription bottles in his bedroom…tranquilizers and such, and so can’t remember some of these things. Aimee (Jill’s girlfriend who also lives with them), told Kevin she bandaged up his hand after the dog bit him last night. Aimee also likes to go around their house with very little clothing on, but apparently Jill can’t see just how creepy her ‘friend’ is. Kevin resists the temptation, and just puts off and ignores Aimee.

There are only 3 episodes left to this current series…don’t know yet if it’ll be picked up for another season. It has kind of low ratings and is unrelentingly depressing. I think this show could only be renewed if it is part of some ‘agenda’. As I said, they seem to be putting forward the idea that bad people were raptured. Is this to get those who will be left behind, ready for the real deal? Plus, that the AC is not born yet (unbiblical)...and…the creators of the show have said that they will never ‘explain’ the reason for the rapture, anyway (the show will *never* say that Jesus came to pick up His followers!).

One thing I will say…the actors in this production are superb. And it is a thought provoking show, if you can stand all the depressing bleakness. The episode about the cults depicting all their deceptions and lies to their mind controlled subjects was excellent, as was the one where Nora went to her NYC job conference and kept fighting against all odds.

See you next week….God willing!

YsiChrist,
