In Hebrew it means violence/wrong. In Arab, it means fanatic/zeal.
Let's see where we find it in scripture:
Psalm 55:11 חָמָס are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
Psalm 74:20 Have respect to the covenant; For the dark places of the earth are full of the dwelling places of
חָמָס.
II Samuel 22:3
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of
my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from
חָמָס.
Psalm 11:5 But the wicked and he who loves
חָמָס His soul hates.
Isaiah 53:9 [Speaking about messiah] And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no
חָמָס, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Ezekiel 7:11 חָמָס has
risen up into a rod of wickedness; None of them shall remain, None of
their multitude, None of them; Nor shall there be wailing for them.
Ezekiel 7:23 ‘Make a chain, For the land is filled with crimes of blood, And the city is full of
חָמָס.
Obadiah 1:10 “For
חָמָס against your brother Jacob, Shame shall cover you, And you shall be cut off forever.
Isaiah 60:18 For
חָמָס shall
no more be heard in you land, nor wasting or destruction within your
borders; But you shall call your walls Salvation, And your gates Praise.
