"question regarding
doctrine of imminence"
Hello Doves,
I’ve been reading this site for a couple of years now and really
enjoy it! Though I don’t normally post on here, I have a
question that I’m having a hard time with.
I’ve been floating around the idea of pre-trib vs.
mid-trib/pre-wrath/post-trib postitions and each side seems to
make very convincing arguments backed by scripture for their
positions. A lot of this appears to be dependent on how
someone defines the Great Tribulation and how long (7 years vs.
3.5 years, etc.). I’m not going to go into all the
details between the two since I’m sure most of you are familiar
with the ideas.
It appears that Paul mentions several times that we are to await
the Lord’s coming at any moment, thus the doctrine of
imminence. However, Peter was told (at the end of the
gospel of John) by Jesus how he would die and that it would be
at an old age, which presumably, would mean that Jesus wouldn’t
come back until at least after Peter died.
Anyway to get to my question….did Paul not know that Peter was
told this? If he knew, then why preach on the imminent
return of our LORD, unless I am misunderstanding scripture?
I honestly don’t want this to turn into a debate on why pre-trib
is correct or why mid-trib/pre-wrath/post trib are
correct. Because really, when it happens, I seriously
doubt there will be people in Heaven claiming that they were
right and someone else was wrong. I’m just looking for
solid Biblical answers as to why it appears that Paul was
teaching imminency based on what Jesus told Peter.
Thank you!
Matt
