There are those who strongly suggests that Mystery, Babylon is to be a rebuilt, ancient Babylon, in its original location on the Euphrates.

Certainly this is not the case at the moment, and would take a number of years, for any city, not existing at the moment, to rise to all the levels described in the book of Revelation.

However, in the defense of identifying Mystery, Babylon with a rebuilt, ancient Babylon, those who advocate that, state their reasons for not believing other thoughts about Babylon's identity.

For one, the name given is Babylon, and therefore, cannot be Rome, New York, or Mecca.

And also, that it is called a city, and therefore, cannot be a country.

However, those arguments are not always the only possible explanation, considering:

Revelation 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

The name Jerusalem is not even used, but the last phrase identifies it as such.

However, it is even called by another city's name, Sodom, which wasn't Jerusalem, and had been in the plains of Jordan.

Additionally, it is not simply called by another city's name, but is called by the name an entire country, Egypt, which wasn't the county of Israel.

So, if in Revelation 11, the place where our Lord was crucified, could be called by name of an ancient city, that no longer existed, why cannot Revelation 17 do similar?

Also, if in Revelation 11, the city is also referred to as an entire nation, then why cannot Revelation 17 do similar, by referring to an entire nation with the name of a single city?
