Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
(Call upon the name - what does that mean? What is a name? Why do we have names?
When Adam's son Seth had son, that is when it says that men began to call upon the name of the LORD:)
Genesis 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
(Abram called upon the name of the LORD, as well:)
Genesis 12:8b and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
Genesis 13:4b and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.
(So, clearly, there is the name of the LORD, then the LORD named Adam, he named Eve, and all the descendants were named.
Rivers, cities, and even stars are given names:)
Genesis 2:14a And the name of the third river is Hiddekel:
Genesis 19:22b Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Psalms 147:4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
(Adam named the animals:)
Genesis 2:19b and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
(I had been taught, and used to always think, that Adam named the various families of the species of animals:
e.g. canis lupus, panthera leo, ursus maritimus, felis catus, etc. As indicated, that is what I thought before.
You can think what you want, but I think that maybe, in the garden, Adam gave personal names, like we do for puppies & kittens.)
(Names meant something unique and special, and that is why some were very careful to name their children for a specific reason:)
Genesis 30:24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
(A person is clearly identified by their name, distinguished from other persons by their name, and then remembered by their name:
Isaiah 42:8a I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another,
Psalms 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Exodus 3:15c this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
(When Moses wanted the LORD to show him his glory, part of that was done by the LORD proclaiming his own name, "the LORD".
Israel was commanded to not take the name of the LORD in vain, and even told to fear the name of the LORD:)
Deuteronomy 28:58b that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
(Many things were said relative to the name of the LORD:)
Psalms 29:2a Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name;
Psalms 54:6b I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
Psalms 96:2a Sing unto the LORD, bless his name;
(And there was something prophetic of the new covenant related to the name of the LORD, but it was not known why, yet:)
Psalms 9:10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee:
Psalms 25:11 For thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
Psalms 116:13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.
(Because it was secret:)
Judges 13:18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
Proverbs 30:4d who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
(Until:)
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
(His name Jesus has to do with saving people from their sins, but, first, let's consider how he came, he came in the name of the LORD:)
John 12:13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
(And Jesus came in the Father's name:)
John 5:43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
(The prophets had prophesied in the name of the LORD, but far more than that, the Son came in the name of the Father.
In the name of, means with the power and full authority of the one with that name, so Jesus came in the full authority of the Father.)
John 10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.
(As Jesus was sent in the Father's name, the apostles were sent in the full authority of Jesus, and did miracles in Jesus' name:)
Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
16a And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know:
Acts 4:7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
(Before entering the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed his high priestly prayer to the Father.
He said that he had manifested the Father's name to his disciples, that he declared the Father's name to them, and will declare it:)
John 17:6a I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world:
26a And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it:
(What is that name of the Father that he declared? It's not the name Jehovah, since that had been declared in synagogues for centuries.
But it was a very dear and personal name that Jesus called the Father, that no one had known, until Jesus told them:)
Matthew 11:27b and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
(I never called my father by his given name, but my siblings and I called him by the very dear and personal name of, "Dad".
In a similar way, Jesus didn't call the Father by the name that God was known as, but like we used, "Dad", Jesus called him, "Father":)
Matthew 11:26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
(Jesus was showing that he is a personal Saviour, that we need to have a personal relationship with him, like he has with the Father.
And that way, we, as adopted children of God, can then have a personal relationship with the Father, as well.
And it is certainly not like some of us did in the catholic church, repeating the words:)
Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
(It was a generic prayer template as guidance for the group of disciples, therefore it was in the plural, "Our Father", "our debts", etc.
e.g. when you pray personally, you call him, "Father", and you bring up your own trespasses, not the trespasses of a group of people.)
(The name, "Father", is dear and personal, in the same way as, "Jesus", is a dear and personal name.
If all we ever say is, "God", and not the personal names of "Jesus" and "Father", maybe we don't yet know him as our personal Savior.
Jesus is called the Saviour:)
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
(How is he the Saviour?)
Acts 2:36b that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
I John 1:7b and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
(So how is his name, Jesus, related to saving us? It is by believing in that name Jesus:)
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
(Not simply believing the story about him, or not simply believing that he generically is the Saviour of the world.
But by believing in that personal name, "Jesus", we are personally coming to him, believing that he will personally forgive our sins.
However, if we don't come to him personally, and ask him personally to save us, then we are not believing in his personal name:)
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
(John wrote his gospel, so people would know of this personal Jesus, so that they could personally believe in his personal name:)
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
(John lets us know that, not only do we have eternal life, already, by believing in the name of Jesus.
But that also, we can know we have eternal life, right now, because we believe in the name of Jesus:)
I John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
(Similarly, Paul lets us know that we are washed, that we are sanctified, and that we are justified, and it's all in the name of Jesus:)
I Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
(Jesus wants us to ask the Father for what we need, and that we should ask in the name of Jesus:)
John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
(And not only when we ask for something, but whatever we do, we should similarly do in the name of Jesus:)
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
(If we have been saved, we now have the Spirit of God living in us:)
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(And now, because of that, we all have the power to witness the gospel to others to be saved:)
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(And because of the power given to him, any, and all of us, can witness the gospel for him, to tell others about the Saviour.
That this great power given to him, looks to be in relation to the great name given to him:)
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
(So, we can be bold telling them how to be saved, believing on the name of Jesus. - We need to tell them the following:)
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Yes, we must tell them that, but what about you? Do you have eternal life? Have you personally asked Jesus to personally save you?
Are you for sure saved and going to heaven? If not, then:)
Luke 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
(Jesus doesn't want you to go to hell, and if we don't believe on him to save us, that is where we must end up, because of sin - but:)
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(How can Jesus deal with your sin?)
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
(If you wonder, "What should I do, right now, to avoid going to hell, and to be saved forever by Jesus? Simply believe!)
Acts 16:31a And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,
(If you believe that Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, then simply call upon his name to save you:)
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
